The Sam Roberson Artist & Activist: Believe, Conceive, Achieve Award is acknowledgment and recognition for a Chicago artist who has demonstrated a strong sense of activism, justice, and equity in their work and lives. Artists who work & live in Chicago, connect communities & people, show a high quality of character, and portray an intersection of art & justice in their work are eligible. This award is in commemoration of the Congo Square Theatre’s late artistic director, Sam Roberson

This commemorative award is made possible by a personal gift from Angelique Power, and a matching gift from the Field Foundation.

The awardee will receive an unrestricted cash award of $1,000 to be used to help with any costs related to working and living as a creative. The deadline for nominations is March 30th. The awardee will be announced by April 30 and presented publicly at one of Congo Square Theatre's Jambalaya Series’ events in the Spring 2018.

Samuel G. Roberson, Jr. made Chicago his home in 2008, where he was well known across the city as an actor & director, as well as his can do attitude, resilience through adversity, and unyielding faith & optimism. A guiding mission in Sam’s work was to bring the experience of Black lives to the forefront of the theater. Sam was born in San Francisco and graduated from Howard University. Sam passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at the age of 34, but his spirit & memory live on through the work we do to make the world more equitable, inclusive, and compassionate.
